I absolutely love newborn sessions, I do! Moms may think I'm just bouncing the baby to get them to sleep but honestly, I'm getting my newborn fix, shhhh. LOL Miss S is such a sweetie and so beautiful! I loved that when dad was holding her she decided to see if his neck would give her nourishment, cracked me up. Those are the moments I live for. My family really kicks off celebration this time of year with many birthdays. My husband is first but for some reason I can't get him to participate in his own photo shoot, LOL So that means I'm lucky having 3 kids to bribe into birthday photo shoots. This is my middle child and she just turned 5. I can't begin to tell you how excited she was to turn 5! She burst into my room, early in the morning, and exclaimed "mommy!!! I'm 5!!!" I promised myself I wouldn't whine one time during her birthday about her getting older. I just wanted to celebrate her joy. Although there is a big part of me that truly did celebrate with her because the journey of watching my babies grow is amazing, a small part of me wishes time just went a little bit slower. Here are a couple of my favorites from her session.

Just wanted to add that Easter this year was absolutely wonderful. I love nothing more than spending time with family. Easter usually signifies the return of my grandparents from Florida, which makes it even more special for me and this year was no exception. My cousin hosted and she is a natural born chef, she has a way with food and rocked dinner. Hope everyone else had a great Easter too!

Seems like I've been seeing a lot of 2 year old boys lately and I don't believe that "terrible 2's" thing. Maybe that's because I have a 2 year old boy and love everything about him. I happen to love this age when baby/toddler/boy collide, it's awesome! This is Mr. H and he was a wonderful 2! I can't get over his adorable looks, check out his smile - I think he looks like some current famous heart throb but I can't think of who. Well regardless, he's a cutie and I loved spending time with him.

Sometimes I take a shot that I know I'm just going to love that is not your traditional *smile* shot and these 2 of Mr. D with his dog made me smile, BIG. He looks so cute hugging his doggie for security. Mr. D just turned 2 and I was lucky to have taken his pictures last year when he turned one. I noticed some changes, like he no longer has red in his hair and he's grown a bit ;) But he still has an adorable smile and a bright sparkle in his eyes.

Finally I was able to take baby J's newborn pictures! My house had a bad case of the flu so I had to stay away and here he is at 3 weeks old. I was afraid he was going to look like a big kid already, LOL but he still looks new. He made the best little baby sounds *squeak*, melted my heart. I don't think the feeling was mutual, he was so over me posing him after about 5 minutes ;) Thanks for putting up with me. It was so good to see your mama - I miss you mama J and am looking forward to our play date with all the kids. xoxo K

Today I started the project 365 . Why you ask? ;) Well for years I was only interested in taking photos of things and places and had little interest in people photos. But once I fell in love with photographing people I stopped, pretty much completely, taking photos of anything but people. My goal with this project is to gain a balance and record a year of my life, one photograph at a time. I think it will be really cool to look back at all the photos at the end of the 365. :) I plan to share many here on my blog so keep checking back. So here is 365-Photo 1 :)

The weather was so nice today!! :) Spring makes me happy. Winter here seems so long and days like today where we get a peek at spring make me sing with joy, but not in public as I am tone deaf. I love taking pictures outdoors so today I found a willing subject (with just a small bribe) and captured a bit of sunshine.

I've gotten a few *hints* recently that my boy needs a hair cut. He probably does but I LOVE his hair and if I cut it, he'll look older and I'm not ready for that. He's at such a funny stage right now, he picks up little tid bits from mommy and daddy and hearing them come out in toddler speak is funny like "I'm rockin' out!" and "you're killin' me mommy." His favorite thing is to announce anytime and anywhere..."I TOOTED!" and then he quietly adds "excuse me." Toots are funny in my house but that's a whole other post for another time. Until then some snaps of my long haired, Cheetos faced boy.

Here he is! Baby J and he is a doll. Just a little snapshot from the hospital. He wasn't in the mood to have his picture taken so I made if fast. I so enjoyed holding him, he melted my heart. Yep, the thought of another one crossed my mind. Did I mention I love newborns?! Babies just grow and change so fast, too fast. We just signed up my baby for preschool for next year and it broke my heart. Enjoy him mama, he'll be big before you know it. xoxoK

My oldest BFF (not in age but number of years) had her baby! Newborns seriously make my heart happy, their little sounds, their smells, their little wrinkly feet, sigh...it all gives me baby fever (and makes my hubby run the other way *wink*). Oh yes, it's a BOY! And both mother and baby are doing well even though he arrived several weeks early... still weighing in at over 7 lbs! I can't hold myself back and I'm off to the hospital to visit. Hopefully I'll have some snapshots of his beautiful face for you tomorrow. Until then, here's a beautiful baby bump.

Giving is Awesome - More Awesomeness!!! {Michigan child photographer)

I haven't had my much anticipated sessions with my Giving is Awesome Recipient yet because we are waiting for nicer weather, something about not being able to fit a family of 11 in my studio...but I'm seriously excited and can't wait to meet this family!!!

Last week I had the opportunity to meet the creator of Giving is Awesome, Ms. Kristen Kalp, and let me tell you, she is AWESOME! I can't say enough good things about her so *awesome* just sums it up really. Well Kristen is still at it and YOU can help. Below is more information or just click here to vote!!!

Giving is Awesome was founded in December of 2008. It was a simple premise: photographers give a portrait shoot and products to a family who deserves it, but can’t afford it. In the twelve weeks since then, over 530 photographers have donated over $550,000 worth of custom portraiture to families who couldn’t afford it. Artists in places as far flung as Australia, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Mexico joined in. Giving is Awesome is also featured in this month’s issue of Professional Photographer magazine, and we’re looking to continue to spread the word about giving. Lenovo and Microsoft are sponsoring the ‘Name Your Dream Assignment’ contest, which grants $50,000 to the photographer who wins to shoot whatever/wherever they would like.

What better way to spread the word than to load 12 photographers into a tour bus and hit up cities with Giving is Awesome shoots? The blog traffic generated by the tour would easily reach 50,000 photographers per day, thus multiplying the number of photographers who sign on for the 2009 version of Giving is Awesome. (The goal: 15,000 photographers for the 2009 edition.)

…but how would we decide who to shoot for those tour bus Giving is Awesome giveaways? Why, we would rely on our friends at ConKerr Cancer, an international charity, to provide our subjects: children currently living with cancer. We’d be bringing awareness of both utterly smashing organizations to light, spreading the photographic love, AND rockin’ a tour bus! Now we’re talkin’!

What if this project doesn’t cost $50,000? Easy! ConKerr Cancer receives the funds to purchase cameras for their chapter coordinators, less the expenses of the tour. This allows the impact of the tour to go much further than the people on the bus, or even the photographers associated with Giving is Awesome. It’s the ripple effect in its truest form, giving sparking giving sparking giving.

Oh the drama! So my oldest was born to be in movies, dramatic movies! Last week she lost her right front tooth. The combination of the opening that was left and the looseness of the left front tooth caused that left front tooth to sort of point sideways. Pretty interesting looking. Well she decided to bet me (thanks to Aunt Sarah) when the left front tooth would come out and she picked next Monday. I gave her the chance to change this date considering the tooth was so loose but she stuck to Monday. Last night she's wrestling with my baby boy (he's 2 and he's all boy) and he "karate chops" her in the mouth and out flies the tooth (which we can't find). Besides the tears and blood, the first thing out of her mouth "I lost the bet *WHAAAAA*" She looks like a little vampire. I couldn't help put to document this all for future harassment. :) Best mom ever!

First - it has been a while, my poor blog has been neglected! I've been busy trying to get back into a routine after our Christmas break. Funny how it takes longer to fix a routine than it does to break it!! I had a session yesterday with one of my favorite boys (if you visit my blog often, you'll recognize him). His mom loves pictures, not so sure little D does but he just turned two and we had to make sure to capture this time as we all know how fast time goes by! Happy New Year everyone! I am back from my unofficial holiday vacation. While I was sad to see another year go by so fast, I welcome 2009! As always, I have resolutions, one of which being a resolution to keep my resolutions, LOL. A big one for me is getting and staying organized. This is hard for me. Its funny, sort of, but my oldest daughter's organizational skills are very similar to my own. Everyday when she leaves her classroom, her backpack is half open with things failing out of it and half of her stuff is forgotten in her classroom. Makes me wonder if I can save myself...here's to an organized year - or something sorta organized will do :)

Here's a quick picture I snapped of my niece when she came for a playdate. I love her big beautiful eyes. Think her daddy ever tells her no?

Giving Is Awesome - the decision

I'd like to thank everyone who nominated someone. I have been touched by every story. Out of respect for the recipient family, I will wait to speak with them directly before I share their story. With that said, the little I do know about this family, I'm very excited to be given the opportunity to photograph them, each and every one of them! That's just a hint of what's to come. :)

I certainly don't mind having a snow day! There is something fun about being able to stay in your pj's all day. And according to my kids, its even more fun to play in the snow! Crazy kids! Well it took about a half hour to get everyone all set in their snow gear and it was worth it to listen to their laughter and see their pink cheeks. The only down side to the snow day is that my oldest daughter missed her school Christmas party. I think a little fun in the snow made her feel better.

This time of year is one of my favorite (minus the cold!). I love how excited my kids get over simple Christmas lights, snow falling, visiting their grandparents, hot chocolate, I love spending time with family and splurging on good food...this year I'm saddened and constantly reminded on how hard things are for so many of us, especially here in Michigan. A fellow photographer Kristen Kalp from Essential Imagery was the brains and heart behind this movement and has encouraged the photography community to join in. So read below to get the details (in the words of Kristen- thanks!).

You know someone. You know someone who's experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can't afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family's spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography - complimentary session, slideshow and $250 print credit, to be exact...it's in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a complimentary custom photography session and a $100 print credit. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be, people?

I'm imagining all the fun these brothers will have as they grow up together. Mr. T, the oldest, is so so sweet and charming and you can see how handsome he is. Mr. A, the middle, is shy and adorable. It took him some time to warm up and a little coaxing to come out of his shell. This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting these 4 beautiful children, thanks to their Grandmother who managed to bring them together for our session. The girls were so sweet and loving with their younger cousins that it warmed my heart. It took some time before Mr. R, the older brother, warmed up but when he did his smile lit up the room (note to self, bust out big trucks at the beginning of session). I swear I can still hear all their giggles today. It was wonderful to meet all of you!

Oh she is so cute and has the best personality! I say this every time I photograph her because it's so true! I can't wait until she can talk because I have the feeling she'll have me laughing all the time. She really wasn't in the mood to be photographed but mom and I persuaded her by playing her favorite music, taking pictures of her teddy bear and letting her see, putting down my soft blanket (she went a little crazy for the soft blanket), a big sucker, snacks...I'm sure there was more, LOL! I love these two! I've known them since birth and they are both full of such character. Mom and Dad were after them to sit up, smile pretty...well they left the room for a minute and I loosened the tie and shirt and told them to strike a pose. I like what I got!

If only I was 8 again I would so ask him to go with me! Isn't he just dreamy?!?! I love his little half smile. LOVE IT!

And Ms. Thing! She's got the looks and tude! Poor daddy, LOL!

Both of them play hockey. On second thought, I think between the older brother and the hockey skills, Ms. Thing can take care of herself!

I was in line to vote this morning at 6:50 a.m. In line around me were some very interesting people. The gentleman behind me was young and kept saying "I'm happy to stand in line, I'm happy there is a line, whether you agree with me our not, I'm happy you are in line." I'm with him - go out a vote!

Everyone I came in contact with this morning was happy and nice. Well, except the one poll worker, she was nice, just not happy. She was having control issues and I felt her pain (I often have control issues) lol;) She needed some coffee I think. Don't forget, the poll workers are volunteers. Not a responsibility I'm volunteering for - a very long day!

Well I'm off to start my day, which will mostly likely be a normal day for me, running the kids, going to the office, having dinner with my family, but will be a historic day for America.

After a day of ever changing weather (rain, thunder, hail, sunshine), the skies cleared just in time for our afternoon together and I'm so happy it did! Mr. P is such a handsome little man and was great to spend time with. He wasn't too excited to be getting his picture taken but he I could barely tell, I think there were moments he may have liked it. Look at the amazing lashes on this little boy, yep, I said boy! They are amazing :) This is actually the other older brother of my son's crush (from previous post somewhere below). I didn't have the opportunity to catch him while I was photographing his brother and sister but was able to get a few minutes with him while we were camping. I've got a soft spot in my heart for this little guy. I've noticed a trend. Give me a toughie exterior with a heart of gold and I melt.

My family went camping this past weekend and the campground was situated around this lake. The view was amazing. The colors are just starting to turn and most of the time, the lake was still and looked like glass. I'm so behind on editing sessions but will try to share more of our camping trip in a few days. We had a great time and the weather was perfect!

Never in my life have I had the pleasure of seeing a field of sunflowers. Until today that is. Today I stood in the middle of a field of sunshine and it was breathtaking! Thank you to the amazing mom who gifted me this pleasure. To top off this moment, I photographed two deliciously beautiful sisters while standing among the sunflowers. Happy Birthday N! May you always have sunflowers for your birthday. And A, you are a wonderful big sister - try not to pass on your wiggles, little Miss Wiggly. :)

C's 1st Birthday was Wednesday and I was lucky to spend part of it with him. I've had the awesome opportunity to watch him grow over the last year. He's such a little man now! Friday night I had the honor of photographing an old friend's wedding. Everything was perfect and beautiful - gorgeous bride, amazing location and the rain stayed away long enough for the ceremony and pictures.

In all the years I've known my friend, I've never seen him as content and happy as he is now. I couldn't be happier for you T and N!!!!

If you look carefully, you can see the ducks swimming across the lake behind them. While they were standing there, about 40 ducks swam across. Gave the bride and groom their very own duck parade!

There are a lot of things I can control and I'm sure the expression on his face is my fault, I think I told him to look down at her and he heard "look down her shirt." LOL They're married so its ok, right!?!? Regardless, she looks AMAZING!!
And this one cracked me up. They both have sons and they chaperoned the photo shoot. Every time the bride and groomed kissed, they would say "HONK!" So dad is cracking up at the honking sons. :)
